Our story

The 3Shape story began in 2000, with two people determined to unlock opportunities in 3D digital technology. We started with scanning for the hearing industry, and now lead digital dentistry with ground-breaking, award-winning 3D scanners and software for clinic and lab. Our mission has never faltered. We still advance and connect medical professionals to create better patient experiences. 

2000 | A revolutionary idea is born…

Two graduate students, Tais and Nikolaj, share a passion for 3D technology. Together, they team up to win an entrepreneurship prize. They create a scanner and software that radically changes the hearing aid industry. At the same time, the digital world begins taking (3)shape.

2005 | Taking a bite of the dental industry

If you can scan an earmold, you can scan a dental model. That logic sparks 3Shape’s very first dental lab scanner and software, and many more to come over the years.

2011 | 3Shape TRIOS - a revolution in intraoral scanning

By 2011, 3Shape is firmly established as a CAD/CAM leader for laboratories. We take our scanning expertise and create an intraoral scanner for practices: TRIOS®. It quickly wins critical acclaim and the dental industry’s Cellerant “Best in Class Award” for digital impression solutions – and every year since!
